A St Catherine man was shot and killed after he allegedly pointed a gun at a police team in Spanish Town yesterday.

He has been identified as 25-year-old Steven Campbell, otherwise called "Bugu," of Bendon District, St Catherine.

Reports are that about 6:30 p.m. on November 11, police responded to a fracas at a business place along Young Street, in the vicinity of the bus park. Campbell was reportedly seen with a firearm, threatening members of the public.

The police ordered him to drop the weapon, but he reportedly disobeyed and ran onto Burke Road, then onto Morrison Street, with the police in pursuit.

During the chase, Campbell was spotted by other officers who were responding to a separate robbery call in the area. He allegedly pointed the gun at them, and they took evasive action and opened fire, hitting him.

A .38 revolver, with the serial number erased, was taken from him.

Campbell was assisted to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Independent Commission of Investigations has since launched a probe into the incident.
