Hanover, St Mary crown Insports football, netball champions
As the Institute of Sports (Insports) parish primary schools football and netball competitions move into the closing stages, two parishes, Hanover and St Mary crowned champions in finals last week.
HANOVER
At Rusea's High School, Campus Two, Esher Primary turned back favourites Lucea Primary 2-1 to win the football title, while Green Island blew away Esher 16-1 to claim the netball crown.
Esher's coach Aubrey Beckford said it was a rough season and they had to properly manage their conquest.
"Our keeper suffered epilepsy issues. Then our main player suffered a collapsed lungs. So we played without him for first part of the season, and he went into final with two damaged toes," Beckford shared.
"In the semis we lost our captain to a red card. So we went into the final without our captain. Then my centre-back had the flu, so we had to take him off and reshuffle the team. So we had to manage all of that," he explained.
"We came through the season unbeaten, beating the favourites Lucea Primary in the final and should be there again next season."
In the final, Alex Frame fired Esher in front by scoring a free kick, and the team's top scorer (10 goals) and MVP Jaydon Lawrence sealed the win after Lucea had equalised.
Lucea Primary's Kacian Johnson was named the Best Female player.
In the third place playoff, Sandy Bay beat Claremont 1-0.
REGAINED CROWN
In the netball final, Green Island made light work of Esher to swiftly regain their crown 16-1, having lost it the previous season.
Green Island's coach Shelliann Miller said despite their reluctance to enter the competition, she was glad they did.
"We were reluctant to enter the competition but the girls wanted to and they did their part and as coaches we did our part," Miller said.
"It was a little difficult. Most of my girls were displaced. We had a little amount of time to practice as best as we could," she noted of difficulties associated with Hurricane Melissa.
"In 2023 we were champions but lost last year to Chester Castle. So we wanted to regain our title."
Meanwhile, Hanover will host its Insports All-Stars football match at Rusea's High School, Campus Two, on Tuesday at 3 p.m..
An Eastern Hanover Combine with go up against a Western Hanover Combine. This will be a first for the parish.
Beckford and Kerio Thomas will coach the West team, while Kenneth Williams, Devin Garwood and Glenroy Peterkin will manage the East team.
