Reggae Boy Cory Burke among four charged following police assault - cops
What began as a football match in Portmore exploded into violence on Sunday, landing Reggae Boy Cory Burke and three other men in serious trouble after two cops were allegedly assaulted according to police.
Burke, 34, of King Street, Spanish Town, along with 38-year-old Keronie Moffat, a customer service representative of Daphnel Avenue, Eltham Park; 32-year-old construction worker Cavel Christie of Salt Pond Road, Spanish Town; and 43-year-old contractor Conroy Green of Dixon Avenue, Maryland 7 Spring in the United States, have all been charged.
They are facing charges of assaulting the police, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and using indecent language.
Police say the incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. at Ferdi Neita Park in Braeton, Portmore, St Catherine, during a football match. According to investigators, the men were travelling in a white Toyota Noah motor vehicle that was blocking an entrance and causing a disturbance at the venue.
Officers reportedly instructed the driver to move the vehicle, but he refused. The occupants then exited the bus, behaved disorderly and directed indecent language at the police.
When officers attempted to make arrests, the men allegedly resisted and physically attacked two policemen, both of whom sustained injuries. Police further reported that additional men later joined in the assault.
Fearing for their safety, the officers fired a single warning shot into the air, which caused the attackers to disperse. Additional police units were summoned, and the accused men were later identified, taken into custody and formally charged.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
