Over 500lbs of Uninspected Meat Seized by Cops in Downtown Kingston
More than 500 pounds of meat allegedly destined for the public without proper inspection were seized during a police operation in downtown Kingston on Sunday.
A 58-year-old vendor, Milton Bundy of Maxfield Avenue, Kingston 13, was arrested and charged following the midday raid carried out by members of the Agricultural Protection Branch.
Bundy faces multiple charges, including unlawful possession of meat, possession of uninspected meat, operating without a butcher's licence, and operating without a food handler's permit.
Police say about 12:00 p.m., a team conducted a targeted, intelligence led operation dubbed Operation Farm Shield. During the exercise, officers intercepted a quantity of meat products allegedly intended for public distribution without the required inspection, licensing and food safety approvals.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the meat had not gone through the mandatory inspection process and was being handled in a manner inconsistent with established public health and safety standards.
The police said the seizure was carried out to prevent potentially contaminated or spoiled meat from reaching consumers.
The Agricultural Protection Branch has intensified its drive against unlawful meat distribution and is reminding the public to buy meat only from licensed and certified vendors, ensure products carry proper inspection markings, and report any suspicious sales activity.
