Man accused of killing nephew after being told to turn down world cup match granted $700K bail
The St Catherine man accused of fatally stabbing his nephew during an argument over the volume of a World Cup football match has been granted bail in the sum of $700,000.
Chad Campbell of Bowie Road, Ewarton, St Catherine, was offered bail when he appeared before Senior Parish Court Judge Desiree Alleyne on Thursday.
Campbell is charged with the murder of 23-year-old Lamar Mullings, an unemployed resident of Bowie Road.
Attorney-at-law Donahue Martin successfully applied for bail, telling the court that self-defence is a live issue in the case and that his client has a fixed address where he can relocate.
The judge granted Campbell bail on condition that he reports to the Lawrence Tavern Police Station twice weekly, stays away from Ewarton, and has no contact with witnesses in the matter.
He is scheduled to return to court on September 18, when the case will again be mentioned.
According to the allegations, about 8 p.m. on June 17, Campbell was watching a World Cup football match on television when Mullings allegedly asked him to turn down the volume.
Police say Campbell refused, and the disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation during which Mullings was allegedly stabbed in the upper body.
Mullings was taken to the Linstead Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Campbell was arrested on the night of the incident on suspicion of murder and was later formally charged following investigations.
