‘This is what I trained for’ - Excelsior’s Reid was confident of winning Class One 100m
Newly crowned Class One boys' 100m champion Riquelme Reid of Excelsior High School says precise execution was the key to his victory at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships inside the National Stadium on Wednesday night.
The 18-year-old Reid stamped his class on the field, storming to gold in a personal-best 10.12 seconds. Tyrice Foreman of St George's College finished second in 10.21, while Omar Finnegan of Edwin Allen High School claimed third in 10.22.
"I was confident that I was going to win, but the aim was to come out here and score points for my school," said Reid.
"I am happy with the personal best because it was something that I expected, as this is what I trained for all season, and so I will take it and move on from here to the 200 metres."
Displaying a calm mindset, Reid credited his composed approach for delivering when it mattered most at the championships.
"I am a nonchalant character and so I don't have fear or fear anyone, and so I just went out there and executed my race and focused on myself, and you all saw the end result," he stated.
"I knew that I wanted to win, and so I just came out here and put it all together in the final where it matters most, because that is where the points are scored and the medals are given out."
Reid also pointed to improvements in a critical phase of his race which helped to contribute to his victory.
"My acceleration is really good because I have been working on that a lot in training, and so I knew, once I executed a proper race, then I would have won the race," Reid added.
"My preparation starts with the mind, and once I get it right off the track, then it is just for me to come out here and do the job on the day."
Reid had set his sights on completing the coveted Class One sprint double.
However, those plans took a hit when he pulled up in his 200m heat yesterday.
