Thieves loot Greenwood Baptist Church, flee with thousands in equipment

January 28, 2026

As if Hurricane Melissa wasn't enough, thieves have now struck Greenwood Baptist Church, breaking in and escaping with thousands of dollars in equipment from the already damaged house of worship.

Pastor Reverend Wayne Smith said the break-in happened last night after criminals forced their way into the house of worship through a boarded-up window.

"The thieves gained entry through a boarded-up window. They ransacked the building and made off with a keyboard, a refrigerator, a stove, four speaker boxes, a computer and three television monitors," Smith told THE STAR.

The church, which has been standing for about 20 years, sits along the border of St James and Trelawny and is still struggling to recover after Hurricane Melissa ripped off its roof.

The Trelawny police have since launched an investigation and are searching for the perpetrators.
