Lilliput Rovers’ coach dissatisfied with tied finish
After surrendering the lead in a thrilling 2-2 draw with newcomers MoBay City FC (MBC), Lilliput Rovers' player-coach Damion Nelson did not mince words, stressing that discipline and concentration will be key if his young side is to take the next step this season.
The Zone B teams had an entertaining clash during the Sandals St James Major League Football competition at Wespow Park on Saturday. Still, Nelson believes the result exposed areas his team must quickly address.
"We have to just go back to the training ground and just put in little work and instil some more discipline in the team and concentration. I mean, sky's the limit for the team and we are a work in progress," Nelson said.
Lilliput Rovers's Adrian Grizzle opened the scoring in the 38th minute, but MBC's Tavin Leslie scored penalties in the 47th and 57th minutes to take the lead. Lilliput Rover's Amari Reid equalised in the 67th to secure the draw.
Lilliput Rovers sit second in Zone B with four points, while MBC are tied in third with Cambridge FC, and Montego Bay Boys and Girls Club (MBBGC) on three points.
While praising the effort of his predominantly youthful squad, Nelson pointed to inconsistent attendance and minor lapses as factors that continue to hinder the team's progress.
With many of the senior players transitioning out of regular competition, Nelson acknowledged the rebuilding challenges but remains optimistic about the club's future.
"We have most young people, most of the older guys, we are kind of retired and all of that. It's a good look going forward, and now we will get better results on the road next game," explained Nelson.
Meanwhile, MBC's coach Garfield Anderson said that with a young squad, there is a need to improve conditioning and cohesion, to enhance their passing game and technical skills.
"We want to get the condition a little bit better, because obviously it is lacking. We started late, and we have quite a few youngsters, 13-year-olds, 14-year-olds, on the squad, with one or two experienced players, so it won't take time for us to get cohesive," said Anderson.
"I believe that as we work on our conditioning, we'll be able to get our passing game going, and then our technical application will definitely improve, and again, will become better. I believe we will improve as the season progresses," Anderson added, noting the team showed character in the second half.
In another game, Zone A leaders, Faulkland FC, thrashed Granville FC 7-0 at Jarrett Park.
When the league resumes on Tuesday, Cambridge will face Bogue FC
